Since the “so-called” evacuation was executed by LNA forces #FreeGanfouda has received several reports of detained civilians, execution of 6 males, boys as young 11 years old detained, and women and children interrogated, beaten and held in custody.
Most recently the National Commission for Human Rights in Libya (NCHRL) has also reported that the civilian families (women, children and men) who exited Ganfouda are being detained in Benghazi’s Kuwaifiya prison.
NCHRL reported that families confirmed that they did not leave by choice and were coerced to leave unprotected through LNA factions due to frequent heavy bombardments, fatalities in their residences, starvation and psychological trauma. Since July 2016 Ganfouda families have expressed legitimate fears of the LNA and their violations of human rights, yet such concerns have been discounted by UNSMIL who supported the evacuation through the LNA, ignoring a November 22nd 2016 signed sea evacuation through a third party.
The NCHRL also expressed deep concern about the fate and humanitarian situation of the rest of families who are still trapped in Ganfouda.
Many speculations have surfaced on the whereabouts and status of the civilian families who have exited Ganfouda. However, the independent findings of #FreeGanfouda, Human Rights Solidarity, and now one of Libya’s most credible human rights organizations, the NCHRL, is sufficient to conclude that Khalifa Haftar continues to commit war crimes against the people of Libya.
The international community’s silence on the disregard for human rights and the violations of international law committed by General Khalifa Haftar and the Tobruk-based House of Representatives’ is unacceptable.
The UN Security Council, the UN Human Rights Council, the Government of National Accord and its foreign allies, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, the ICRC and the Libyan Red Crescent must investigate and protect those who have exited Ganfouda and those who remain.
